LIFE ON THE FARM

Our cows are housed in a tie stall barn. Which means that each cow has a specific stall to call home. In the warmer months, the ladies go outside for the day to munch on some nice fresh green grass. The cows are milked twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening.

We have two different types of cows on the farm; Milking Shorthorns and Holsteins.

Holsteins
  • Holsteins are the iconic dairy cow and are known for producing the most milk out of any breed of dairy cow.
  • Mature Holstein cows typically weigh around 1,500 pounds and stand 58 inches tall at the shoulder, making them the largest of the U.S. dairy breeds.
  • Holsteins are known for their outstanding milk production, desirable phenotypic characteristics, and adaptability to a wide range of environments.
  • The average Holstein cow produces around 23,000 pounds of milk, or 2,674 gallons, of milk each lactation. With a standard lactation lasting 305 days, that comes out to 75 pounds, or almost 9 gallons of milk per cow per day.

Milking Shorthorns
  • Shorthorns are very efficient at converting nutrients into milk and therefore require less energy to produce the same volume of milk.
  • Milking Shorthorns do very well grazing on pasture. Grazing for Milking Shorthorns is as natural as roosting is to a hen!
  • Milking Shorthorns are significantly less prone to disease, particularly in the areas of lameness, mastitis, dystocia and milk fever, than their Holstein herdmates.
  • Mature Milking Shorthorns average over 15,000 pounds milk, 500 pounds fat and 465 pounds protein.

Hooves off to you!

Kandy
This wonderful old lady is the head of a family of beautiful cows. As a calf she was very headstrong but has calmed down in her old age. In her hayday she was first place spring yearling and first place three year old at the Big E. While she is not the oldest cow on the farm at 12 she is still milking strong!

 Kookie
This gentle giant was a sweetheart from the start! Even as one of the biggest cows in the barn she loves being in the stall next to her mama, Kara. At 7 years old, Kookie likes to reminisce about the good old days of going to the shows with her pals. Like Kandy, Kookie placed first in her class at Big E once too!

Krimson
This friendly cow has passed on her loving and sociable manner to each of her calves. She is still loving the fact that she gets to go to shows right along with her daughters Kutie Pie and Kowabunga this year! Although she is 7 and hoping to do well herself she is rooting on her two daughters in their calf classes!!

Picture
Pine
This proud new mama is loving being in the big barn with all the other milk cows. She had her first calf this winter and has taken quite well to being milked twice a day, although sometimes the morning milking are tough (shes not too much of an early bird).

Picture
Monstah
Monsta's goals are to eat as much as she can, even if it means stealing a little hay from the girl next door and to grow up to be as big and produce as much milk as her mom Kookie!
